How to Photograph Many pets in One Photo Session

The four cats are all blind and it took three people to photograph this image. One behind the camera, one holding the instrument and hold a cat. The image was put together in post production. The three dogs held their position from using verbal cue and treats. The last photo is a composite and is about five images put together.

How to Photograph Multiple Pets in One Session:

A Guide for Pet Parents Capturing the personalities of multiple pets in one photography session can be a delightful, yet challenging task. Whether you’re photographing a duo of dogs or a pack of playful pets, it requires a bit of preparation, patience, and creativity. At Brice Photography, we love the challenge of photographing multiple pets together and making sure each animal’s unique character shines through. Here are some helpful tips to ensure your session is a success, and everyone—both pets and humans—has a great time!

Enlist the Help of Others Photographing multiple pets at once can be tricky, and having an extra set of hands is always beneficial.

Create a Comfortable Environment A relaxed pet makes for better photos. Before the session begins, make sure your pets feel comfortable in the environment. This could be your home, backyard, or a favorite park—somewhere they are familiar with and can move around without anxiety.

Pro Tip: Give your pets time to explore the area and settle down before starting the session. Let them sniff around and relax. This is what I highly recommend before a session as well.

Use Noises to Grab Their Attention Instead of using treats, noises can be an effective way to keep pets focused on the camera. I often use unfamiliar sounds. Noise Makers: A simple noise maker that the pets aren't familiar with can work wonders. However, be careful not to use toys that trigger a play response—if it sounds like a toy they usually play with, you might end up with excited, bouncy dogs eager to grab the toy instead of posing!

Give Pets Breaks Between Shots Just like humans, pets can get tired or lose focus after a while. It’s important to give them short breaks between shots, especially when working with multiple animals. Allow them to roam, play, or take a quick rest before moving on to the next pose or location. Breaks also help prevent pets from becoming anxious or bored during the session.

Be Patient and Embrace Candid Moments Photographing multiple pets takes patience, and sometimes the best shots happen when things don’t go exactly as planned. Embrace the candid moments—whether it’s a spontaneous cuddle between pets or a playful interaction, these unscripted moments often create the most heartfelt and memorable images. Patience is Key: Pets have their own timing, and sometimes it takes a little while for them to settle into the session. Patience will pay off when you capture those perfect, natural moments.

Pro Tip: Start with individual shots while the pets are calm, then move on to group shots once everyone is more comfortable. Final Thoughts Photographing multiple pets in one session can be both fun and challenging, but with the right approach, you can capture stunning, heartwarming images that celebrate their personalities. At Brice Photography, we love working with all kinds of pets, and we’re ready to help you create lasting memories with your furry friends. Ready to Book Your Multi-Pet Photoshoot?
