What to wear in Photos?                                         Posted November 10th, 2016

Has a photographer ever consulted you on what to wear in photos and you have said, I will just wear what I want. I always consult with my clients on the do's and don't of wardrobe and send a handout for them to read and reference to.  The article below explains some great points on what to wear. It is just as important as the lighting, location, props etc..  The clothing can make or break a photograph of YOU!!  YOU are the focus, correct, so lets make sure we do it right.

Here are some quick pointers on dressing for success.

  • If the portrait is being hung in a room that is formal, dress formal.
  • If the portrait is going in a room where you hang out and it is informal then dress casual.
  • The goal is to showcase YOU not your clothing so dress simple, no patterns, no stripes, no logos.
  • Wear a top with sleeves, why? because items closest to the camera will appear bigger. If your arm is closest to the camera your arm will look bigger and I am sure you don't want that.
  • If you choose to wear color wear subtle clothing, pastels are nice but the key is make sure everyone in your portrait is dressed in similar color tones. If you go with blues than have everyone dress in as close to the same color tone. The pants should match the tone of the top.  If you go with darker top go with a darker pant.
  • Socks and shoes should match your pants, please no white socks unless you are wearing light pants. White socks will stand out in an image.
  • Jewelry, I encourage jewelry and pieces that really mean something to you. Possibly a watch from a grandfather, or a ring from a great grandmother. Keep the Jewelry subtle as well because the focus is on YOU and not the jewelry.
  • Make up, bring along your make up to touch up, lip gloss, foundation etc..
  • Hair-dress it up or dress it down that is up to you. Bring your hairspray to do touch-up if need be.
  • Glasses-If you wear progressives, if you can change them out, than change them out.
  • Black or dark clothing recede, which means they will help slim the body.

Below is a great in depth article on what to wear in photos.

Read and be prepared for this up coming Christmas portrait season.
